Debt is dispossession, expulsion, exploitation; a tool for dominating a state or a community, it also seeps down to intimate, quotidian spaces. It is an extractive cruelty meted out on bodies and territories. This virtual presidential panel will address the genealogy of debt that runs from colonial domination to the globalized, techno-capitalist present. What connections can be found between financial abstraction and domestic economies? What is the impact of debt on gendered and racialized bodies? How can one survive the space and time that debt creates? What strategies can we imagine to confront obligatory or compulsive indebtedness?

Presidential Session: In alignment with the Congress theme, the LASA2025 Program Committee has organized 11 sessions that address current issues in the Americas. These sessions bring together experts to explore the political, social, artistic, and environmental challenges facing the region. The presidential sessions are open to all in person registered attendees and will be live-streamed to the general public via the official LASA Facebook and YouTube pages.
