Biography

Born and raised in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Elliott stayed in-state to complete his undergraduate studies in Environmental Management at Indiana University. After graduation and a few far-off travels, Elliott joined the Peace Corps where he served as a environmental science teacher in the mountains of Nicaragua for 2 years. Following a long bus ride home from Central America, Elliott landed in Denver, Colorado. He began a position with Water For People, an international development non-profit working in the water and sanitation sector, for 2 years while skiing and climbing in the beautiful Rocky Mountains. While at Tulane, Elliott focused his research on the challenges that exist to reaching lasting, sustainable solutions in international development work in Latin America. Elliott earned his M.A. in Latin American Studies from Tulane in May 2014.

Laura Mellem

Biography

Laura received her B.A. in Critical Theory and Social Justice with a minor in English and Comparative Literary Studies from Occidental College in Los Angeles and has since called New Orleans home. Exploring the relationship between race, gender, biomedicine, and the role of the State, Laura's undergraduate thesis examined histories of population control in the Americas. Her time in New Orleans post-graduation has been spent working with neighborhood development organizations on issues ranging from hurricane recovery and revitalization to access to technology and wellness programs. At the Stone Center, Laura pursued her M.A. with research interests including women's Caribbean diaspora literature, themes of 'motherhood' and 'motherland,' and transnational identity formation. Laura earned her M.A. in Latin American Studies from Tulane in May 2014.

Molly Hansen

Biography

Molly Hansen, originally from Cary, North Carolina, completed her undergraduate studies at Appalachian State University in 2012 earning a B.A. in Spanish and a B.A. in Art History. During her time at Appalachian she participated in an Alternative Spring Break trip in San Isidro, Costa Rica in 2010 and studied abroad for the Spring 2011 semester in Sevilla, Spain. Her senior honors thesis in part focused on the public representation of African religious symbols in Latin America, specifically Brazil and Cuba, and as a member of the Stone Center she focused her research on Latin American, and particularly Brazilian, art. Molly earned her M.A, in Latin American Studies from Tulane in May 2014.

Annalisa Cravens

Biography

Originally from Madison, Wisconsin, Annalisa Cravens is a 2010 graduate of Tulane University. A Dean’s Honor Scholar, she earned her B.A. in Latin American Studies and Spanish with minors in Brazilian Studies and Portuguese. She earned an M.A. in Latin American Studies, joint with a J.D. degree from Tulane, in May 2014. During her undergraduate career, Annalisa spent a summer abroad session in Mexico as well as splitting her Junior Year Abroad between Brazil and Argentina, and she received the Almir Bruneti Award for Excellence in Luso-Brazilian Studies in 2010. Annalisa's undergraduate honors thesis, directed by Professor James D. Huck, Jr., and the result of research in Arizona and Sonora, was entitled “The Environmental Condition on the U.S.-Mexico Border since NAFTA: Water Contamination in the Region of Ambos Nogales.” Her main interests were immigration and contemporary international relations, particularly those of Mexico and Brazil in relation to the United States.

A recipient of the Robert Rees Memorial Scholarship, Annalisa entered Tulane Law School in fall 2011 and graduated with her J.D. in May 2014. In law school, her publications in the Tulane Law Review have reflected her interest in Latin American Studies and immigration law. Her first, Orellana-Monson v. Holder: The Fifth Circuit Accepts the BIA’s Particularity and Social Visibility Requirements for Defining Membership of a Particular Social Group in Asylum Claims, concerned the Fifth Circuit’s adaptation of onerous requirements for certain asylum seekers and received the Gertler Law Review Award. Her second publication, “This Is Not the System Congress Created”: Rethinking Louisiana’s Immigration Law after Arizona v. United States, examined Louisiana’s criminalization of alien drivers, a statute now struck down by the Louisiana Supreme Court. Annalisa served as the Senior Articles Editor of the Tulane Law Review and completed a federal judicial clerkship with the Honorable Martin L.C. Feldman.

Biography

Originally from Hancock in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Baird received B.A.'s in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, French and Francophone Studies, and Applied Linguistics at University of Michigan, graduating with High Honors. He has studied in Italy, Chile, Brazil, and Senegal and was the 2009 recipient of the Chiara Maria Levin Award for Breadth and Excellence in the Romance Languages. During his undegraduate career, he focused his free time on the situation of undocumented workers in Southwest Michigan, volunteering with several organizations as an English teacher, translator, and pesticide/health educator. His Honors thesis was entitled 'Más Chileno Que Los Porotos' and was a study of the contributions of Mapudungún and Quechua to the modern Chilean dialect of Spanish. In 2009 he received a Department of State Fulbright grant and spent the next two years teaching English in Fuenlabrada, Spain, a suburb of Madrid. Upon returning the USA, he took a position as Adjunct Spanish Faculty at Finlandia University in Hancock, MI. Baird is also a freelance translator and has worked for the George Wright Society. Baird’s MA thesis analyzed Chile's mainstream LGBT movement through the lens of hegemonic masculinity, exploring its deployment at three crucial moments in the country's modern LGBT movement. Baird earned his M.A. in Latin American Studies from Tulane in May 2014.

Biography

Originally from Williamsville, Trinidad and Tobago, Shearon Roberts graduated as valedictorian of Dillard University and earned her Master's in Mass Communication from Louisiana State University. She has worked as a freelance reporter and journalist in Costa Rica as well as for the Miami Today News, China Daily U.S.A., and the Trinidad Guardian after having interned with newspapers such as the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post. Shearon has worked as an assistant lecturer at the St. Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies teaching communication studies and oral communication. She co-authored an article entitled 'Visual Agenda-Setting & Proximity after Hurricane Katrina: A study of those closest to the event' in Visual Communication Quarterly. This article was co-authored with LSU Associate Professor Andrea Miller with whom she is also co-authoring a book on crisis coverage in the Gulf Coast. During her academic career, Shearon also produced both undergraduate and graduate documentaries. She also works in freelance photography and online news coverage in addition to print freelance work. At the Stone Center, Shearon focused her research on international, Latin American and Caribbean news coverage, Latin American and Caribbean foreign image and crisis news, particularly that in Haiti. Shearon graduated from Tulane with her Ph.D. in Latin American Studies in May 2014 and is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Mass Communication at Xavier University in New Orleans.
