Tulane students to represent Paraguay at Model OAS 2027
The Stone Center for Latin American Studies is offering undergraduate students the opportunity to participate in the Model OAS. This diplomacy simulation exercise will be held during the Spring 2027 semester and allows college students nationwide to experience how the Organization of the American States (OAS) General Assembly works. Every participating delegation represents an American country, and for the 2027 simulation, Tulane will represent Paraguay.
This experience requires enrollment in LAST 4960-01 "Model OAS" for the Spring 2027 semester. The class, with an enrollment limit of 10 students, meets weekly on Wednesdays during the regular Spring 2027 semester, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
During this class, students learn about the OAS and contemporary Inter-American affairs, and conduct an in-depth study of the history, politics, and foreign policy of the country they will represent (Paraguay). Students will also spend significant time composing Preliminary Draft Resolutions (PDRs) to be debated and considered during the Model OAS simulation exercise in Washington, D.C., from April 5 to 10, 2027. Students must also commit to travel on those dates to participate in the course.
The LAST 4960-01 course will be taught by the former Tulane Diplomat in Residence, Shane Hough.
We will host a virtual information session on October 26 at 4:30 p.m. for anyone who wants to learn more about the program, course, and the trip to Washington, D.C. Bring your questions and talk with the professor and alumni.

Eligibility
Any undergraduate Tulane University student is eligible to apply; however, preference will be given to Latin American Studies majors/minors. Enrollment in the Model OAS course requires departmental approval and the submission of an application. Completion of this form constitutes your application for the program.
Application Process
Students interested in enrolling in the Model OAS course must complete a Qualtrics survey and must answer every question fully and completely. Applications will be considered by a committee of former Model OAS student participants and Stone Center faculty and staff. Additionally, applicants will have to participate in a brief 10-15-minute interview, which will take place the week of November 5 and 6.
A note on funding
The Stone Center subsidizes a good portion of the costs of participation in the Model OAS in Washington, DC. However, students are expected to apply for funding from other on-campus sources. We will work on these external grant applications as a part of the Model OAS course.
Application deadline: 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 30, 2026
Applicants will receive decisions by Friday, November 13th, 2026.
Students who are selected to participate will be given enrollment instructions at that time. Questions about the Model OAS program and the application process may be sent to Dr. G. Maris Jones (gjones@tulane.edu)
