Summer Funding Week

The goal of Summer FUNDing Week is to share information on summer opportunities, specifically grant funding, available to undergraduate students at Tulane University. We hope students leave this workshop series with an enhanced knowledge of the opportunities (i.e., grant funding, internships, research) available to them and are able to apply to these opportunities. The Kick-off Event will include a hot chocolate bar and a raffle for a spring picnic kit including a bluetooth speaker!

The Beautiful Sea: French Navigation and Maritime Description of the South Pacific (1698-1717)

Maps and maritime journals are essential instruments while navigating uncharted waters. However, these sources can also provide other forms to understand landscapes and communities. When French direct trade took the coasts of Peru by storm during the first decades of the eighteenth century, the King of France commissioned sailors to survey the coasts and provide detailed maps and descriptions that could help the French understand the territory better. Nonetheless, these journals were even further than providing navigational information.

Contemporary Crises in cuba and Venezuela

Both Cuba and Venezuela sought to be a different nation, to be a better society. In Cuba, under Fidel Castro and Raúl Castro, they strove to be a communist, egalitarian society across social class and races. In Venezuela, under Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro, they strove to achieve the socialism of the 21st century—a socialism without poverty. They also developed a formidable alliance—trading doctors for oil. But in the 21st century their societies have been riddled by deep seated crises—economic and political both.
