Professional Development Opportunity: Latin American Resources for the K-12 Classroom

S.S. NOLA, in collaboration with the Latin American Resource Center, will be hosting a professional development opportunity for K-12 educators on Saturday, January 20, 2018, to examine the ways in which educators can utilize and share resources on Latin America in the classroom. On Thursday, February 8, 2018, join us for a 60 minute webinar/chat focused on Margarita Engle's recent book Lion Island: Cuba's Warrior of Words. In this haunting yet hopeful novel in verse, award-winning author Margarita Engle tells the story of Antonio Chuffat, a young man of African, Chinese, and Cuban descent who became a champion of civil rights. Exploring Foods of the Columbian Exchange: K-12 Teacher Workshop
Southern Food and Beverage Museum

Join us at the Southern Food and Beverage Museum for a fresh perspective on the Columbian Exchange. This workshop will engage educators with hands-on activities to provide a Louisiana perspective on the foods of this exchange. Learn from cultural historians and food experts about the impact the Columbian Exchange had on Louisiana. Participants will gain a unique experience of teaching about this topic through food with an engaging activity coordinated by faculty from Tulane University's Teacher Certification Program. The workshop is $10 and includes lunch, curricula, and a certificate of completion. 2018 Maya Symposium K-16 Teacher Workshop

The Stone Center for Latin American Studies, in collaboration with the Middle American Research Institute, will present a teacher workshop in conjunction with the 15th Annual Tulane Maya Symposium on March 9, 2018. The K-16 Educator Workshop will focus on a basic introduction to the archaeology and culture of the Maya for the K-16 classroom. The central topic this year is Political Organization of the Maya, relevant to the warfare theme of the Symposium. The workshop includes a tour of NOMA's Art of the Americas exhibit. 

Teaching Cuban Culture & Society: A Summer Educator Institute in Cuba

The program application for the 2018 Summer Educator Institute in Cuba is now available! The Stone Center for Latin American Studies, the Cuban and Caribbean Studies Institute at Tulane University, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies have organized the 2018 Summer Educator Institute in Cuba (June 23 – July 7, 2018). Join us in Cuba to experience first-hand the history, politics, language, and culture of Cuba. This institute provides the tools for educators to develop internationalizing curriculum that accurately and effectively brings Cuba into the classroom. The application deadline is March 2, 2018.

Teaching Brazil: Expanding Perspectives on Colonial History

DEADLINE TO APPLY AS CURRICULUM WRITER EXTENDED
July 7 – July 17, 2018
The centers for Latin American Studies at Tulane University, Vanderbilt University, with support from the University of Georgia will take K-16 educators in various disciplines to Brazil. The institute will approach Brazilian culture from a multidisciplinary perspective focused on colonialization. The trip will include a pre-departure orientation and two weeks of overseas travel. The institute will explore the cities of Salvador, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo to focus on their respective role in colonial history. The deadline to register as a Curriculum Writer is March 9, 2018, and the final deadline to register is March 15, 2018.
