Youth and Family Programming

The Latin American Resource Center offers a vibrant array of youth and family programs designed to foster cultural appreciation and community engagement. These initiatives are presented in collaboration with community partners such as The New Orleans Public Library, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Krewe de Mayahuel, Audubon Zoo, The Mexican Consulate of New Orleans, and The Broadside. 

 

Annual and ongoing events include: 

Martes in MidCity con la Familia (Family Fun Night) - Martes in MidCity provides hang-out time for Spanish-speaking and bilingual families with free activities, snacks, and books at the MidCity branch of the New Orleans Public Library. Each date features a unique activity or game, snacks, and book giveaway door prizes. In addition, Américas Award books will be featured. This program a recurring free evening of activities for the whole family.  

Bilingual Story Hour - Beloved storytellers from our community present award-winning books for children in English and Spanish at the Algiers Branch of the New Orleans Public Library. The recommended age is 3-5 years old. 

Celebración Latina - Every fall during Hispanic Heritage month (September 15 – October 15) The Stone Center for Latin American Studies, The Pebbles Center, and The Audubon Zoo sponsor a  family festival located in the zoo. This festival began in 2004 in order to celebrate Latin America within the community through reading together and celebration.  

Fiesta Latina – Presented by the Stone Center for Latin American Studies and The Broadside, Fiesta Latina is an annual festival celebrating Latin American music in honor of Hispanic Heritage month. 

DÍA/Día del Libro - El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day), commonly known as Día, is a celebration of children, families, and reading that culminates yearly on April 30. The celebration emphasizes the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds.  

Día de los Muertos Procession - Krewe de Mayahuel is an inclusive and diverse non-profit organization passionate about Mexican culture and its positive influence in New Orleans. The Latin American Resource Center supports Mayahuel’s annual Día de los Muertos procession and festival.
