Tulane University Student Conference on Latin America

About TUSCLA

The Tulane University Student Conference on Latin America (TUSCLA)  is an all-day interdisciplinary student symposium held annually, in which students can experience what it is like to present papers and posters in the style and atmosphere of an academic conference while engaging in shared discussion of the region, its society, and its cultures.

We are very excited to host this academic conference, which has grown immensely since 2003. We had an outstanding turnout at the 21st  conference in 2024, with over 6 panels, 25 panelists, and 60 posters including both graduate and undergraduate Latin Americanist across Tulane's campus!

The Stone Center invites all undergraduate and graduate students, both inside and outside of the Latin American Studies programs, to attend, present, or speak about their work on Latin America.

How can I participate?

The Stone Center invites all undergraduate and graduate students, both inside and outside of the Latin American Studies programs, to attend, present, or speak about their work on Latin America.

The Stone Center Organizers will circulate a Call for Registration in September each year. To register, you will need the following:

  • - Project Title
  • - Project Abstract
  • - If panel, a short biography
  • - Use this form to register your desire to participate.

Poster Submission Instructions

Posters are a great way to communicate a research project efficiently and visually. They combine text and images to summarize background, methodology, and key findings. The poster should be able to communicate on its own, but presenters will also have the opportunity to deliver a quick 30-60 second pitch during the designated poster session.

The  library guide  offers tips and templates to prepare your poster.

Additionally, this year we have created a recommended template for you to use as you prepare your poster: Download it here

If you wish to design your own poster, please ensure it has a vertical orientation and fits the dimensions of 21x36 inches.

This year’s TUSCLA will feature different poster sessions throughout the day to accommodate students’ schedules. Presenters will have the opportunity to give their availability and will be assigned to a poster session after registration has closed. If your LAST1010 course meets on Friday, expect your poster session to be held in that time slot.

The Stone Center offers free printing for students who submit their posters by the priority deadline. If students do not submit their posters by the priority deadline, they are responsible for printing their poster at their own cost and dropping off the final version at the Stone Center Office (100 Jones Hall) by November 19, two days before the conference.

Final Poster Submission

  • - If Stone Center is printing, upload poster by  noon, Friday, November 14
  • - If Self-Printing, place order online at the FEDEX website (estimated cost is $34.50) for uptown LBC pick-up or at the “submit a plot” form at the School of Architecture’s Digital Fabrication Lab.  Drop off in the Stone Center's office (100 Jones Hall) by  5 p.m. Wednesday, November 19th.

Presentation Preparation Instructions

Students with more advanced research projects may choose to present their findings orally as part of a scholarly panel moderated by a Tulane faculty member or post-doctoral fellow. Each participant will have 10-12 minutes to present. Presenters may choose to speak with minimal notes and a visual aid or to read a pre-prepared essay aloud, according to standards of the field and/or guidance from their professor. The panel concludes with a Q&A session for all participants.

Presenters should submit their titles, biographies, and preliminary abstracts to the Stone Center by the registration deadline. The Stone Center will arrange presentations into panels and communicate final scheduling information.

Until they receive the final conference program, presenters should keep the entire conference day open in their schedules. Please ensure to mark any unavailability in the initial form, as once you are assigned to a panel, we will not be able to move you for logistical reasons.

To make final arrangements for the conference, we ask that you submit any final information about your panel presentation to be included in the conference program:

  • - Final Presentation Title
  • - Final Presentation Abstract (150 words max)
  • - Submit to this form by noon, Friday, November 14

We will also ask you to pre-submit any visual aids so that we can pre-load them onto conference technology by 5:00 p.m., November 19. Please format the presentation as a .pdf or .pptx file and include your panel number and last name in the file name (i.e. “Panel 1_Maasland”).
