After the wars of conquest in Mesoamerica during the sixteenth century, a complex process of reorganization of the Indigenous population started, with social, political, and economic implications. The Indigenous nobility, some of whom fought alongside the Spaniards, quickly adapted to the new political regime through various legal strategies to keep their privileges as principal lords. One of these involved elaborating manuscripts and visual stories similar to the European legal documents known as probanzas de méritos.

In 1992, Italian prosecutors uncovered a decades-long corruption system cutting across regions and levels of government. The Clean Hands operation resulted in hundreds of convictions and permanently changed the Italian political landscape. What conditions led to the success of the Clean Hands operation? Livio Sansone (Palermo, Italy, 1956) got his PhD from the University of Amsterdam and has been living in Brazil since 1992, where he is Professor of Anthropology at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). Prof. Sansone is the founder and director of the Factory of Ideas Program – an advanced international course in ethnic and African studies – and coordinates the Digital Museum of African and Afro-Brazilian Heritage. He has published widely in Portuguese, English, Italian, Spanish, and Dutch. His books include Blackness Without Ethnicity.

One of the great innovations of the 8th century Maya world, full-figure inscriptions appeared at four Maya sites over the span of 100 years: Palenque, Copán, Yaxchilán, and Quiriguá. These inscriptions, while linguistically sound and conforming to the genre of monumental dedication texts, present a complex visual landscape for analysis. In this presentation, I summarize the key takeaways of my analysis of this corpus, which formed my dissertation at Tulane.
