On April 30, 2024, in celebration of Día del Libro (Children’s Book Day), Colombian musician Gaita Loop will visit the Main Library branch of the New Orleans Public Library. Gaita Loop is a young artist from Barranquilla, Colombia who loops the traditional gaita (indigenous wind instrument of the Colombian Caribbean) with electronic beats. This event is being produced in collaboration with NOPL and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

A One-Day Festival of Wordsmiths & Musicians!
New Orleans has a growing number of African and Latin American Wordsmiths crafting some of the most engaging verse that addresses social justice concerns, and this one-day festival celebrates these brilliant Poets of Color in the Crescent City. This year, the festival celebrates Honduran Women Poets, featuring Edith Romero & Jennifer Pagan. The event will also host Honduran Garifuna poet and singer Rudy Mills.

Leonard Jacome was born in Rubio, Táchira State, Venezuela. He is a multi-instrumentalist, arranger, composer and producer and one of the World's most prolific and accomplished harpists. He has won numerous awards representing Venezuela abroad and has toured and performed throughout Latin America, United States, South Africa, Europe, Africa, Japan, Malaysia, and UK. Leonard is also working to develop a contemporary identity for the South American harp. He is the creator/inventor of the Venezuelan electric harp, with the support of Camac-Harps of France.

The New Orleans Harp Society will host a Guest Harpist Residency featuring Venezuelan harpist and teacher, Leonard Jacome. The Harp Extravaganza will take place on Sunday afternoon, September 17, 2023, at East Jefferson Regional Library in Metairie, preceded by a harp ensemble workshop session with the guest harpist, Leonard Jacome. The harp workshop will be at 12:30pm and solo recital ending in a group harp ensemble performance starts at 2:00pm.
