Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the 2020 edition of Summer in Brazil is moving to an online format. Applications for the virtual program are now open, and applicants will be accepted on a rolling basis. Apply now to secure your spot, as seats may be filled before the May 1st deadline.

This 6-week online summer program, sponsored by the Stone Center for Latin American Studies at Tulane, caters to graduate and undergraduate students who wish to achieve a high level of Portuguese fluency through intensive engagement in Brazilian language and culture. With language classes at the intermediate and advanced levels, students study with experienced Portuguese language faculty both in Brazil and in the United States. Each participant enrolls in two Tulane credit-bearing courses organized in collaboration with our partner institution CET. In their Portuguese language course, students polish their reading, writing, and conversation skills by engaging with Brazilian art, film, and literature. Meanwhile, they delve into the current cultural, social, and political landscape of São Paulo in “Contemporary Social Issues in Brazil,” a course co-taught in Portuguese by Tulane and CET professors. CET will also be organizing virtual activities outside of the classroom, where participants can explore São Paulo and its surroundings through organized on-line excursions to museums, virtual visits with artists and intellectuals, and interact on-line with their classmates and Brazilian university students with on-line bate papos. This program meets FLAS guidelines for contact hours and has been determined to be eligible for students to attend on summer FLAS fellowships.
