Sophia Mcclennen to discuss Latin American cinema, globalization, and politics during talk and workshop

Join the Spanish and Portuguese department at Tulane University in welcoming Dr. Sophia Mcclennen for a talk and workshop discussing globalization, Latin American cinema, and politics.

Dr. McClennen is professor of international affairs and comparative literature and the founding director of Penn State’s Center for Global Studies. Her research focuses on a range of topics all of which coalesce around the question of how culture, politics, and society intersect. Her work often analyzes the links between political events and their media representations, which has led her to critique the relationship between mainstream culture, politics, bias, and social injustice. She also publishes on cultural responses to social conflict such as those associated with war, imperialism, immigration, dictatorship, patriarchy, and globalization. Other central research areas include work on political satire, social media, and the millennial generation.

On Thursday, October 18, Dr. Mcclennen will give a talk based on her most recent monograph titled Globalization and Latin American Cinema: Towards a Critical Paradigm at 4:00 PM, in 100A Jones Hall.

Dr. Mcclenna will also lead a workshop titled Satire, Politics, and Resistance: The Global Rise of Comedy and Activism, on Friday, October 19, at 3:00 PM in 407 Newcomb Hall.
