Reflections is published annually to hallmark events at Tulane’s School of Liberal Arts. In the fifth annual publication, Tulane archaeologists Drs. Marcelo Canuto, director of the Middle American Research Institute, Francisco Estrada-Belli, and John Verano are highlighted for their recent research in Latin America.

In this issue, archaeologists Drs. Canuto and Estrada-Belli discuss their contributions to a team of researchers that discovered dozens of ancient Maya cities in Guatemala using LiDAR (light detection and ranging) technology. Physical anthropologist Dr. Verano discusses his research examining the skeletal remains of human sacrificial victims dating to a period when the Chimu Empire flourished in prehistoric Peru.
