George A. Kubler and the Shape of Art History is the latest work by Thomas Reese, Executive Director of the Stone Center for Latin American Studies and Professor of Art History at Tulane University. Kubler (1912–96) was a foundational figure in the history of art, who during over five decades at Yale University published seventeen books that include innovative monographs, major works of synthesis, and an influential theoretical treatise. In this intellectual biography, Reese analyzes the early formation, broad career, and writings of this influential scholar, casting nuanced light on the origins and development of his thinking and his impact on the disciplines of ancient Latin American art, architecture, archaeology, anthropology, and the history of Spanish and Portuguese architecture, as well as the methodology of these fields. Published by the Getty Research Institute, the book is available for purchase directly from the Getty Museum Store.
