Professor Amalia Leguizamón wins Global Development Section Book Award for Seeds of Power

Tulane Professor Amalia Leguizamón won the The International Studies Association (ISA) Global Development Studies (GDS) book prize. The GDS seeks out books that take "a scholarly concern with development and global justice working across a number of fields, for example, postcolonial studies, development studies, critical political economy, critical security studies, social and political theory, history, sociology, gender studies, and public policy."

Amalia Leguizamón is Associate Professor of Sociology. She is also a core faculty member at the Stone Center for Latin American Studies and a member of the Environmental Studies Faculty Advisory Committee.

The Global Development Section says about her work: "Amalia Leguizamón’s Seeds of Power (Duke University Press, 2020) brings a truly inspiring discussion about the narratives of development and prosperity and those who are left behind in this process. In engaging with interviews, Leguizamón shows us a way to learn from peasants and their social movements and not about them, in a sanitized hierarchical fashion. She captures the presence of environmental injustice in the interstices of Argentina’s embrace of modernizing agriculture, a presence whose insights also help us understand indigenous genocide both in Latin America in general and in Argentina specifically. Importantly, this book is not only an academic endeavor but a bridge that implicates social struggles in and beyond the continent. It is a book that creates a space of transnational solidarity amongst peasants and those who struggle for social justice."
