Uptown Campus

Photo from Nouvelle Vague: Carnival in Jacmel, Haiti

Maskarad (mask) is a project of Nouvelle Vague: an artist collective group of young multimedia artists from Jacmel, Haiti working to promote, preserve, document, and share the richness and complexity of Haitian life, culture and lore. Their photography captures the carnal pleasures, mystical dimensions, vibrant artistry, colorful tales, and personal stories of Jacmel‘s Carnival celebrations. Every Carnival mask and suit represents a rich story within Haitian folklore. At this event the artists will share their photos and talk about the various carnival characters and their political, social, and satirical role within Jacmel.

Presentation given in English with supporting French interpreter. Reception to follow. Open to the public.

Sponsored by the Cuban & Caribbean Studies Institute and CubaNOLA Arts Collective.
