Visiting Scholars Program (uncompensated)

The Stone Center and the Center for Inter-American Policy and Research have sponsored on special occasions one or two visiting Latin Americanist doctoral students or scholars who seek a nominal affiliation with Tulane University for purposes of conducting their own independent research. This Visiting Scholar Program does not offer any financial compensation or remuneration to applicants, nor does it provide access to computer equipment or to printing services. Depending on availability, the program may provide the use of shared office space if it is available. The Stone Center adheres to the University Provost’s Visiting Scholars and Artists Policy.

Visiting Scholar applicants must be nominated by a regular Tulane Faculty member affiliated with the Stone Center and must submit the following documents by email attachment to the Stone Center as part of their application: (1) Academic CV; (2) A brief research proposal and timeline for the proposed visit that outlines what the applicant hopes to accomplish as a visiting scholar, why a Tulane affiliation is important and necessary, and why the Stone Center would be an appropriate sponsoring unit; and (3) a letter of nomination from one of our affiliated faculty who will agree to serve as an appropriate campus resource when necessary or, in the case of doctoral students, who will agree to serve as an informal advisor. Doctoral students conducting dissertation research must also submit an additional letter from their dissertation director who can speak to the research project and who can recommend the student for this visiting research affiliation.

The application deadline is May 1 for a visiting scholar appointment over any period of time for the subsequent academic year. All application materials (and any questions about the program) should be sent by email attachment at one time to rtsclas@tulane.edu and should have “Visiting Scholar Program” written in the subject heading. Applicants will be notified of a decision regarding their application by May 31. Non-U.S. citizens applying to be a visiting scholar are responsible for securing the appropriate Visa and paying for any relevant Visa fees. More information for Non-U.S. citizens on this process can be found at the website of Tulane’s Office of International Students & Scholars.
