Model OAS: A Course That Explores the Process of Contemporary Interamerican Diplomacy

The Stone Center will sponsor a Model OAS experience for undergraduate students during the 2025 Spring semester. This unique opportunity allows college students nationwide to experience how the Organization of the American States General Assembly works. Each participating delegation represents a country; this time, we are assigned to Argentina.

This experience requires enrollment in LAST 4960-01 "Model OAS" for the Spring 2025 semester. The class, with an enrollment limit of 10 students, meets weekly on Wednesdays during the regular Spring 2025 semester academic calendar from 3:00 - 5:30 p.m.

During this class, students learn about the OAS, contemporary InterAmerican affairs, and an in-depth study of the history, politics, and foreign policy of a particular country (Argentina) that the class will represent at a simulation exercise in Washington, DC. Students will also spend significant time composing Preliminary Draft Resolutions (PDRs) that will be debated and considered at the Model OAS simulation.

Since this class requires participation in the Model OAS, students must also commit to travel to Washington, DC, over the week of April 6-11, 2025.

Eligibility

Any undergraduate Tulane University student is eligible to apply; however, preference will be given to Latin American Studies majors/minors. Enrollment in the Model OAS course requires departmental approval and the submission of an application. Completion of this form constitutes your application for the program.

Application Process

Students interested in enrolling in the Model OAS course must complete a Qualtrics survey and must answer every question fully and completely. Applications will be considered by a committee of former Model OAS student participants and Stone Center staff. Additionally, applicants will also have to participate in a brief 10-15 minute interview, which will take place over the week of November 4-8.

A note on funding

The Stone Center subsidizes a good portion of the costs of participation in the Model OAS in Washington, DC. However, students are expected to apply for funding through other sources on campus. We will work on these external grant applications as a part of the Model OAS course.

Application deadline: 5:00pm on Friday, November 1, 2024

Applicants will receive decisions by Friday, November 15.

Students who are selected to participate will be given enrollment instructions at that time. Questions about the Model OAS program and the application process may be sent to Prof. Jimmy Huck (jhuck@tulane.edu

The online application can be submitted via this link: https://tulane.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_aWtauFVNXKwgmNM
