Biography

Maya Alam Martinez (she/her) is a first-year MA student in Latin American Studies. She earned her B.A. in Anthropology, with minors in Spanish and Sociology, from the University of Texas at Austin. Through the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship, Maya completed a two-year research project focusing on indigenous resistance and adaptation to globalization in the Selva Lacandona of Chiapas, Mexico. Maya’s current research interests include conceptions of ‘alternative geographies’ in Latin America, with a focus on decoloniality and Indigenous land management, mestizaje and racial categorization, and Mexican nationalism.
