Penny C. Morrill (Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Maryland, 2001) is a leading scholar of William Spratling and the artistic movements surrounding the Taxco silver renaissance that took shape in post-Revolutionary Mexico beginning in the 1920s. Dr. Morrill has taught Mexican art at George Mason University and has published widely on Spratling, the modern Mexican silver design industry, and early modern Mesoamerican art. Among her monographs are Mexican Silver (with Carole A. Berk, Schiffer 1994, 4th edition, 2007); Silver Masters of Mexico (Schiffer 1996); Maestros de Plata: William Spratling and the Mexican Silver Renaissance, editor and curator (Abrams/San Antonio Museum of Art 2002); Margot Van Voorhies: The Art of Mexican Enamelwork (Schiffer 2011); The Casa del Deán: New World Imagery in a Sixteenth-Century Mexican Mural Cycle (University of Texas 2014); and Dreaming in Silver: Silver Artists of Modern Mexico (forthcoming, Schiffer 2018). Dr. Morrill was instrumental in establishing the Sutherland-Taxco Collection at Tulane University's Latin American Library and has assisted in the development of permanent modern Mexican silver collections at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.
