K-12 Educator Workshops Move Online

May 12, 2020 12:15 PM

The spring Ancient Civilizations K-12 Educator Workshop Series culminated last week with the Teaching Aztec History through Art online webinar (now archived on our YouTube Channel). The move to online workshops allowed over 50 educators to join us from across the country. Art historian and PhD candidate, Hayley Woodward provided an insightful look at common myths and innovative resources for teaching the Aztecs in the K-12 classroom. Two local New Orleans teachers were selected to develop teaching resources based off of the series. The two teachers, Brittney Dayeh (3rd grade teacher of ELA and Social Studies) and William Gillispie (9th – 12th grade teacher of History) both work at Lusher Charter School and are currently finalizing a set of new resources on ancient civilizations from Louisiana indigenous communities of the Tunica to Central American civilizations of the Maya and Aztecs. Look out for those lesson plans soon.

The workshop series was co-sponsored by the Stone Center for Latin American Studies (SCLAS), S.S. NOLA, the Middle American Research Institute, and AfterCLASS.
