Join the delegation: Tulane students to represent Dominica at Model OAS 2026
The Stone Center will participate in the Model OAS experience for a third consecutive year, offering undergraduate students the opportunity to participate in a diplomacy simulation exercise during the 2026 Spring semester. This unique program enables college students nationwide to experience firsthand how the Organization of American States (OAS) General Assembly operates. Each participating delegation represents a country. Our 2026 delegation will represent the island nation of Dominica.
Participation requires enrollment in the course LAST 4960-01 "Model OAS" for the Spring 2026 semester. The class meets weekly on Wednesdays during the regular Spring 2026 semester academic calendar from 3:30 – 6:00 p.m.
In class, students learn about the OAS and contemporary Inter-American affairs, and take a deep dive into the history, politics, and foreign policy of the country (Dominica) they will represent. Students will also spend significant time composing Preliminary Draft Resolutions (PDRs) that will be debated and considered at the Model OAS simulation exercise in Washington, D.C., from April 7 to 10, 2026. Students must also commit to travel on those dates to participate in the course.
The LAST4960-001 course will be taught by former Tulane Diplomat in Residence, Shane Hough and PhD student Ezra Remer, founder and Executive Director of the Dominica Coffee Revitalization Initiative.
We will host an in-person information session on October 21 at 5:00 p.m. in the Greenleaf Conference Room (Jones Hall, Room 100A) for anyone to learn more about the program, course, and the trip to Washington, D.C.
Eligibility
Any undergraduate Tulane University student is eligible to apply; however, preference will be given to Latin American Studies majors/minors. Enrollment in the Model OAS course requires departmental approval. Interested students should complete the application process outlined below to be considered.
Application Process
Students interested in enrolling in the Model OAS course must complete a Qualtrics survey and answer every question fully and completely by Wednesday, October 29, at 5:00 p.m. Applications will be considered by a committee of former Model OAS student participants and Stone Center staff. Additionally, applicants will also have to participate in a brief 10-15 minutes interview, which will take place over on November 3 and 4, 2025.
A note on funding
The Stone Center subsidizes a good portion of the costs of participation in the Model OAS in Washington, DC. However, students are expected to apply for funding through other sources on campus. We will work on these external grant applications as a part of the Model OAS course.
Application deadline
Applicants will receive decisions by Friday, November 7, 2025.
Students who are selected to participate will be given enrollment instructions at that time. Questions about the Model OAS program and the application process may be sent to lastadv@tulane.edu.
