Ever since the drop of oil prices in the international market, four years ago, Venezuela has been undergoing a global and deep crisis. There are few examples of such a crisis in Latin America throughout history. This talk will address the global crisis through a historic, holistic perspective that highlights the structural causes of the society's collapse. It will also provide insight into recent political trends.
Professor Margarita López Maya is a visiting senior researcher at the Center for Inter-American Policy and Research. For more than twenty-five years she has studied political and social participation in different historical periods of Venezuela's democracy. She researches parties and popular protest in 20th century Venezuela, especially during the final years when Venezuelan society entered a deep political crisis and the once strong party system declined.
