How Journalists Survive Mexico: Pathways from Tragedy and Impunity to Resistance and Resilience Featuring Dr. Celeste González De Bustamante, School of Journalism and Media, University of Texas at Austin

In this talk Dr. González will be discussing what follows:

Abstract: Since 2000, more than 165 journalists have been killed in Mexico. Despite a federal law that makes it a crime to attack journalists or human rights workers, the conditions continue to be dire. Corrupt government officials collude with organized crime groups in attempts to silence journalists, and reporters who work on the country’s periphery are at most risk. In this talk, Dr. González de Bustamante discusses how journalists have turned to one another and to their communities to resist pressures and create their own networks of resilience. Given a lack of support from media owners, the government, and the public, journalists have taken it upon themselves to become their own activists. And, while journalists in Mexico continue to be murdered, journalism is far from dead.

Analyzing the 2022 Brazilian Election and Perspectives on the Future Government

Called to the polls to choose between the far-right populist and current President Jair Bolsonaro, and center-left former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Brazilians face a decision that will impact the very survival of one of the world’s largest democracies. In the wake of this historic moment, this event will showcase Tulane’s in-house expertise in Brazilian politics and society by bringing scholars together to discuss the aftermath of the 2022 Brazilian elections and what lies ahead.

Join us for a conversation on topics that include the makeup of the new Congress and state governments, the military's role, and the policy choices the winner will have to face in the upcoming presidential term."
