The Stone Center invites you to Café con Alberto Barrera. This intimate meet and greet will be an opportunity to connect with Barrera, an influential writer and thinker from Venezuela. In addition to his creative work as a poet and novelist, he has co-authored, with journalist Cristina Marcano, Hugo Chávez sin uniforme: una historia personal, the first biography written on this controversial figure. He has also penned Alta Traición and Un país a la semana, two texts that chronicle the tumultuous political landscape in the Venezuela of recent years.

HAITIANOLA and the Stone Center present artists from the Jacmel Arts Center in Jacmel, Haiti. This event will feature live dance as well as a discussion on Haitian art and its connection to New Orleans culture.

Brazil had the longest-lasting slave economy in the Americas, importing an estimated ten times as many African slaves as the U.S. In recognition of Black History Month, we will celebrate the monumental importance of these four million enslaved men and women with a bilingual reading of the Castro Alves poem “O Navio Negreiro (The Slave Ship).” For more information contact: Professor Megwen Loveless. Ludwig Bemelmans was an Austrian author, an internationally known writer and illustrator of children's books. He is most noted today for his Madeline books, six of which were published from 1939-1961. A seventh was discovered after his death and published posthumously in 1999. A lesser known book was written after Bemelmans traveled to Quito, Ecuador. This book, Quito Express was originally published in 1938 by Viking Press. The story has not been shared as widely as the Madeline series but the story is an important one.

Join us for an evening with Tom Friel, Coordinator for Interpretation and Public Engagement as he walks through an innovative tool developed to share the Newcomb Art Museum’s latest exhibit, Laura Anderson Barbata: Transcommunality. The program is designed to introduce K-12 educators to Laura Anderson Barbata’s work and focus on specific elements of the exhibit that connect deeply to the K-12 classroom. While the exhibit is open to limited public access, it plans to open to the public and school visits by Fall 2021.
