Charles A. and Leo M. Favrot Professor of Human Relations David Smilde Writes Op-Ed for NYT

Charles A. and Leo M. Favrot Professor of Human Relations and Senior Associate Fellow at CIPR, David Smilde, was recently published in the New York Times, for an opinion piece discussing relations between Venezuela and the United States. Dr. Smilde’s article responds to comments made by President Trump regarding military action that could be taken regarding Venezuela, as well as looking at the sanctions already in place by the United States. The article also discusses the Lima Group and its role in mitigating the current situation in Venezuela.

Smile concludes his piece by calling for a diplomatic, not militaristic, solution:

“The United States, the European Union and the Lima Group have an important role to play in addressing the Venezuelan crisis. But that does not mean they need to seek military solutions. Strategic politics and painstaking diplomacy provide the only constructive means of turning Venezuela's dire situation around.”
