Alum Jesús Ruiz Publishes Piece on Haitian Refugees in the Washington Post
Jesús Ruiz, 2020 Tulane PhD graduate in Latin American Studies, published a piece in the Washington Post today titled "Haiti is a source of refugees today, but it was once a haven for them." The piece offers the greater historical context for the contemporary crises faced by Haitian asylum seekers.
Ruiz notes that Haiti has long been a haven for refugees fleeing anti-Black oppression in the Americas, the United States included.
Ruiz is a a National Academy of Sciences Ford Foundation postdoctoral fellow at Vanderbilt University, focusing on History. He is currently writing a book on the political history of the Haitian Revolution. In the past, Ruiz worked as an asylum officer.
