The Achieving Dreams Fashion Show aims to present and share the clothing lines of New Orleans-based Garifuna Zechor Fashion with a diverse range of communities. This company is committed to creating unique designs in a wide range of sizes, featuring bright colors and patterns, which for the Garifuna people represent happiness and celebration of their Afro-Indigenous culture. This event is organized and sponsored by Teresa Morales, the founder and director of Zechor Fashion, LLC.

The Mexican Cultural Institute and the Consulate of Mexico in New Orleans are pleased to invite the New Orleans community to their photography exhibition entitled “Day of the Dead in Mexico,” on view from October 30th to December 3rd, 2019. The opening reception takes place on Wednesday, October 30th from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at the Mexican Cultural Institute.

The Stone Center invites you to Café con Alberto Barrera. This intimate meet and greet will be an opportunity to connect with Barrera, an influential writer and thinker from Venezuela. In addition to his creative work as a poet and novelist, he has co-authored, with journalist Cristina Marcano, Hugo Chávez sin uniforme: una historia personal, the first biography written on this controversial figure. He has also penned Alta Traición and Un país a la semana, two texts that chronicle the tumultuous political landscape in the Venezuela of recent years.

Brazil had the longest-lasting slave economy in the Americas, importing an estimated ten times as many African slaves as the U.S. In recognition of Black History Month, we will celebrate the monumental importance of these four million enslaved men and women with a bilingual reading of the Castro Alves poem “O Navio Negreiro (The Slave Ship).” For more information contact: Professor Megwen Loveless.
