Laurent Dubois, John L. Nau III Bicentennial Professor of the History & Principles of Democracy, Academic Director of the Karsh Institute of Democracy at UVA, and a prominent historian of Haiti and the Atlantic World, will give a presentation on his current research project on Thursday, April 13, 2023. The talk will be at 4:00 in Hebert 201, with a reception following in Hebert 125D. His talk is co-sponsored by Africana Studies, the New Orleans Gulf South Center, and the Department of History.

“Seven Rivers & A Sea, or What Was the French Atlantic?”

In this talk, I will share work on my new book, a history of the French Atlantic, which explores the interconnected history of seven river/delta systems in Europe, North America, Africa, and the Caribbean Sea. The work moves from the early 1500s to the Louisiana Purchase, arguing that what in fact constituted the French Atlantic was less a coherent colonial system that a complex set of networks linked together by river and ocean travel, through which all of these areas were transformed through their connections to the other. At Tulane, I propose to share the aspects of the work focusing particularly on the Mississippi and its links to the Caribbean and Senegal.
