Lucia Abramovich graduated from the joint Latin American Studies & Art History Ph.D. program in May 2019. Her doctoral dissertation, titled, “Precious Materiality in colonial Andean Art: Gold, Silver, and Jewels in Paintings of the Virgin”, examines the value and meaning of precious ornamentation on two-dimensional religious images from the colonial Andes. Lucia holds a B.A. in Anthropology from The College of William & Mary, and received her M.A. with Distinction in The Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas from the University of East Anglia’s Sainsbury Research Unit. She formerly served as a curatorial research assistant at the National Museum of the American Indian, and recently held the position of Curatorial Fellow for Spanish colonial Art at the New Orleans Museum of Art. Her research interests include the study of precious metals and gems in colonial art of the Andes, connecting economic development and art-making in Pre-Columbian and Early Latin America, and Latin American art in museum contexts.
