Lunch with LAGO featuring Amy Medvick

Uptown Campus
The Labyrinth Cafe, 7102 Freret St, New Orleans LA 70118

Join the Latin Americanist Graduate Organization (LAGO) on Friday, 2/7 at 12pm for the latest installment of our bi-weekly lunch series. Amy Medvick is a PhD candidate at the Stone Center for Latin American Studies, specializing in the contemporary and historical study of Brazilian music and other performances practices. Her interests include music and cultural politics, the relationship between cultural practice and intellectual production, the history of ethnography and folklore studies, and the transnational and trans-local migration of musical practices. She holds a BA in Jazz Performance and an MA in ethnomusicology. Her talk will look at a chapter of her dissertation project that examines the often-contradictory aspirations of an early 20th century effort in Recife, Pernambuco state, Brazil, to create “mass” and “elite” forms of popular music out of a local working-class Afro-Brazilian carnival practice. Afterwards, we’ll open the floor for a Q & A, allowing for further conversation about Amy’s work, more practical questions about the dissertation research and writing experience, and other topics of interest to the group.

The Labyrinth will be serving mini paninis, savory spreads and dips, fresh juices, coffee, and yerba matte. Please come hungry!
