Carolina Helena Timóteo de Oliveira completed her undergraduate studies in English Linguistics, Literature and Teaching at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Belo Horizonte, Brazil where she researched Critical Literacy. She worked as an English and Portuguese teacher in Belo Horizonte for seven years before she earned her master’s degree in Latin American Studies from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Her master’s thesis, “Afro-Brazilian Culture as a Means of Transformation: Spaces, Businesses and Political Participation in Belo Horizonte, Brazil,” contemplates how Brazilian Hip-Hop can challenge social patterns and build new realities. At UNC Charlotte, she taught Portuguese and Afro-Brazilian History and Culture and participated in an ethnographic research concerning social and racial dynamics in Charlotte, North Carolina. At the Stone Center, Carolina will expand her research on Afro-Brazilian culture, investigating matters of Afro-identity.
