Joe graduated from the Stone Center’s MA Program in Latin American Studies in August 2018. He earned his B.A. in Gender, Women‘€™s & Sexuality Studies with Honors from Grinnell College in 2012. During his time as an undergrad, he completed internships with the School of the Americas Watch Partnership América Latina in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, and with the Coordinadora Juvenil por la Equidad de Género (Youth Coordinator for Gender Equity) in Quito, Ecuador. He also presented research based on his experiences with the group Witness Against Torture at the 2012 New School Annual Anthropology Conference. Before returning to school to pursue his M.A. at Tulane, he was active in campaigns for prison abolition and migrant justice in Seattle, WA. His research interests include queer and feminist theory, violence, activist/engaged scholarship, and the effects of policing and militarism.
