Sonia Nazario to Speak in New Orleans in November

June 23rd, 2015

The Latin American Resource Center is pleased to highlight the upcoming appearance of award winning author Sonia Nazario at the National Council for Social Studies (NCSS) annual meeting in New Orleans (November 13-15, 2015) . LARC is sponsoring Nazario‘€™s appearance at the conference, and it is a great opportunity for social studies educators from around the country to hear about her work and ways in which it can be integrated into the classroom.

Nazario is a journalist who specializes in reporting on social issues. Her series, ‘€œEnrique‘€™s Journey,‘€ about a Honduran boy‘€™s struggle to find his mother in the U.S., which was originally published in the Los Angeles Times, won the Pulitzer Prize in 2003. She turned the series into a book, also available in a Young Adult version, which was an Américas Award commended title in 2014. Lesson plans and ways to integrate the book into the classroom, are available on the book‘€™s website. Nazario‘€™s lifelong commitment to social issues and the accessibility of the discussion of these items in the K-12 classroom makes her an excellent person to speak at a national education conference!

In addition to this exciting speaker, LARC is also co-hosting a pre-conference clinic ‘€œNew Orleans, Gateway to the Americas: Trade, History and Globalization‘€ in collaboration with the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, New Orleans Branch. The clinic will explore the relationship between New Orleans and Latin America, particularly Mexico, based on trade. The clinic will include a guided walking tour of land marks in New Orleans related to this relationship. For more information and registration information, visit the NCSS website.

For outreach professionals who are in town for the conference, LARC is sponsoring a meeting on best practices in outreach to social studies professionals, Area Studies and Outreach in the Social Studies Classroom November 10 -11th. This exciting meeting will bring together outreach professionals from around the country to meet and discuss how best to help social studies educators. LARC is looking forward to all these upcoming activities!
