A group of Cuban artists that will be performing at Xavier on April 20th in front of the UC Yard.

Proyecto Omni Zonafranca is a multidisciplinary art group based in Alamar, Cuba—the birthplace of Cuban hip hop, rock, and many alternative arts. Omni is known for their controversial and awe-inspiring performances that fuse hip hop, spoken word, art, and music. Omni founders Amaury Pacheco del Monte, Luis Eligio Pérez, and David Escalona are making their U.S. debut and touring their performance art show Mákina Total City throughout the U.S. Please come and welcome them to New Orleans!

Their performances include a seamless mix of a flood of evocative, provocative images, powerful poetic expression, percussive sound made on three ancient Cuban typewriters, ecstatic dance, and their own special brand of hip hop that they call “free hop.” The three members of the group use a poetic, performative, artistic language, in a spirit of truth, engagement, and dialogue very different from the overheated polemics we are used to hearing about Cuba.

For a preview, take a look at these two clips/ video montages from a recent show at Baruch College in New York:
Omni-Zona Franca at Baruch College, 3/23/12

While they are in New Orleans they will also perform at Zeitgeist, Ashe, local poetry nights, El Divino Corazon, and enjoy New Orleans street performances.
