Tulane University has a long history of archaeological research in the Northern Maya Lowlands. We invite you to join archaeologists and specialists in hieroglyphic decipherment for a series of lectures, discussions, and workshops focusing on recent discoveries about the Classic Period (A.D. 250-900) of this area.
The Tulane Maya Symposium
and Workshop will begin with a keynote address on the evening of Friday,
October 31st, which is free and open to the public. Saturday's events
include a series of lectures from preeminent scholars in the fields of
Maya archaeology and epigraphy whose research focuses on Classic Period
sites located in the Northern Lowlands of the Yucatán Peninsula.
Sunday, November 2nd features workshops at both beginning and advanced
levels for those interested in exploring Maya hieroglyphic texts or other
topics ranging from astronomy to Maya calendrics. All events will take
place on the campus of Tulane University. Click here

Public Events
Please join us for the keynote address by Dr. George E. Stuart on Friday evening, and be sure to make time on Friday afternoon for a guided tour of the collections gallery of the Middle American Research Institute. Tours will be offered at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Each tour will be limited to 15 people, so please register early. Registration is on a first-come first-served basis.

Join renowned lecturer Dr.
George Stuart, who recently retired as Staff Archaeologist of the
National Geographic Society, as he takes us on a journey through northern
Yucatán from the 1950s to the present. Highlights will include
behind-the-scenes views of archaeological explorations at Dzibilchaltún
(1957-60), Balankanche cave (1959), and Cobá (1974-75), as well
as Dr. Stuart’s reminiscences of the many archaeologists and adventurers
he met while traveling in the northern Maya lowlands for National Geographic.

for each session. The morning workshops (Session I) are from 9:30 a.m.
to 12:30 p.m., with a mid-morning refreshment break. Please join us at
9 a.m. for coffee.

are from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., with a mid-afternoon refreshment break.
