Cultural
Explorations of the Maya
July 1-13, 2005
Yucatán, Mexico
Join Tulane professor Amy George Hirons
and University of New Orleans professor Allen Bryant on a two-week journey
through the Yucatán visiting great cities and sites such as Mérida,
Tulúm, Valladolid, Chichén Itzá, and many more.
Participants will receive 6 hours of graduate or undergraduate Curriculum
and Instruction credit from the University of New Orleans' College of
Education.
Structure of Program:
Prior to departure, participants will be required to conduct readings
and participate in online discussions and chat. These readings and subsequent

gather information and materials for the development of curricular resources
for use in their classrooms. These items will be assembled into an electronic
or traditional portfolio, due August 1, 2005. Grades will be based on
pre-departure participation, participation while in the field and the
development of curricular resources.
Courses:
Cultural Explorations of the Maya
Professional Development Program - EDCI 4993.1
by: Dr. Allen Bryant
The course is designed to prepare students
for the trip by examining the Maya culture, both historically and contemporarily
by reading and discussing books that examine this culture from an archaeological,
historical, political and sociological perspective. Each book should
be read prior to the class meetings and departure for the Yucatán.
These discussions will center on the social science perspectives, as
well as ways to develop a curriculum focus based on the readings and
the trip. The class will meet in an online environment four times prior
to departure.
Mayan Art in the Classroom - EDCI
4993.2
by: Dr. Amy George-Hirons
In this course, students will receive
an overview of important elements of Mayan art in Northern Lowlands
in the Classic and Post Classical times, paying particular attention
to the artistic styles and medium that the Maya used. This coverage
of Mesoamerican indigenous art will help students with their understanding
of art within other indigenous groups, both within this region and the
world.

Summer
Seminars Abroad for Spanish Teachers: Guatemala
July 5-21, 2005
The
Center for Latin American Studies and the Department of Spanish and
Portuguese at The Ohio State University announce this year's intensive
Summer Seminars Abroad, a two-week workshop in language and linguistics
in Antigua, Guatemala. The purpose of the program is to provide selected
students with an opportunity to analyze and practice the Spanish language
in a natural linguistic and cultural context, and to receive university
credit for that experience. The program, tentatively scheduled for July
5-21, 2005, is intended primarily for Spanish teachers. Application
is open, however, to undergraduate and graduate students from Spanish
and other disciplines who have a demonstrated ability in the use of
the Spanish language and a need for this type of course. Both native
and non-native speakers of Spanish are invited to apply. More information
and applications are available at: http://oia.osu.edu/ssast/
