Curriculum Packets

Under generous grants from the Tinker Foundation, Inc. and a Fulbright Hays Group Project Abroad Grant, the LARC has been able to publish 4 self-contained mixed-media curricula. These resource packets were designed with multiple independent units that may be integrated into an existing course or combined to provide all necessary materials for a 9-16 week program on Latin America. The print materials are fully reproducible for classroom use; purchase of one copy includes the right to make multiple photocopy reproductions.

Latin America: Land of Diversity: This nineteen-unit guide for social science courses was designed for grades 9-12 but is also being used at the middle school and university levels. Each unit includes definitions of important terms, reading assignments, discussion questions, activities, a short objective quiz, and supplemental materials including newspaper and journal research, writing, and critical thinking skills. Over 400 pages of text are accompanied by 225 slides, a comprehensive final exam and a large full-color map of the Americas. Now available on-line for free!

La tierra mágica: Una exploración cultural de la América Latina: Each of the nine chapters of this curriculum guide for the teaching of Latin American culture in the advanced high school through advanced college Spanish class includes reading assignments, discussion questions, activity plans, and supplemental materials such as literary selections, cartoons, games, maps, and songs. The discussion questions and activities are designed to develop advanced-level speaking, listening, reading, writing, and research skills, as well as encouraging a comparative, global understanding of many intercultural issues. Most activities are also appropriate for teaching culture to bilingual or native speakers. The complete course includes 500 pages of reproducible text, more than 140 slides, and over 30 minutes of recorded music. All materials, including vocabulary definitions and instructions, are in Spanish. COST: $80.00 Purchase

COSTA RICA IN FOCUS/ Enfoque en Costa Rica: This bilingual interdisciplinary curriculum centered on Costa Rica is divided into four units: Geography and Environment/Geografía y el medio ambiente, History and Society/ Historia y sociedad, Government and Politics/Gobierno y política, Daily Life and Culture/ Vida cotidiana y cultura. Each unit revolves around the topic indicated in the unit title, with six short readings exploring different aspects of the general topic. Special vocabulary words, maps, graphics and photographs are included to clarify the text. Each reading is followed by a section of short answer questions, a vignette from Costa Rican experience, and suggested research topics. Each unit is accompanied by slides to supplement the materials presented. All material is presented in English and Spanish. COST: $60.00 Purchase

Environmental Literacy Across the Curriculum: COSTA RICA: Developed as a result of a 1994 Fulbright Hays Group Study Abroad Project, this packet is designed to encourage the integration of environmental literacy in all classes using Costa Rica as a case study. This four-unit packet is in English and contains background text, 40 pages of activities, and 80 slides. COST: $45.00  Purchase


Slide Packets

The following media packets have been developed by the LARC to remedy the lack of commercially-available resources in specific subject-matter area. Each packet contains a teacher's guide, suggested readings, and classroom activities as well as the specified number of slides or audio cassettes.

All slides packets are now freely available for download. LARC will still sell slide packets if you desire.

FAVELAS OF RIO DE JANEIRO: Favelas, or squatters settlements, are a housing alternative for the poor of Brazil. This packet emphasizes who the inhabitants are, misconceptions concerning the residents, their jobs, favela construction, and the social support networks within the settlements. 28 slides.  COST:  $10.00  Purchase

COLONIAL MEXICAN SOCIETY: Life in Mexico's colonial period (1519-1824) was diversified, complex, and in a constant state of evolution. This packet places particular emphasis on socio-economic issues such as silver mining, the trans-Atlantic trade, the rise of large landed estates, labor systems, etc. 27 slides. DAY OF THE DEAD: The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday which takes place on November 2 and commemorates the death of relatives and friends while serving as a fascinating and lively celebration for the living. THE CHRISTIAN BASE COMMUNITIES OF LA PAZ, BOLIVIA: Poor people in Latin America are creating a new kind of socio-religious system called a Christian Base Community, or CEB. Members of the CEB group together to discuss the relationship of Christian teachings to their social reality. The packet emphasizes the situations the poor face and the ways in which CEB try to meet these challenges. 30 slides. COST:  $10.00  Purchase

LIFE IN CONTEMPORARY CUBA (1990): In 1959, Fidel Castro and his fellow revolutionaries triumphantly paraded through downtown Havana, thereby dramatically changing the Latin American political climate. ARGENTINE NEW SONG: THE EVOLUTION OF PROTEST MUSIC: The New Song movement, which emerged in Latin America in the 1960s, is a fusion of traditional forms with socially relevant lyrics. PARAGUAY: QUIET BEAUTY OF SOUTH AMERICAS HEARTLAND: Paraguay, a landlocked nation in the center of South America, has a unique history. CARNIVAL IN VERACRUZ: The Mexican port city of Veracruz is famous for its tropical ambience, marimba rhythms, and unique cuisine.
