Title: Quilombo Country
Mediatype: Video
Description: "Quilombo Country, Afrobrazilian Villages in the 21st Century" is a film directed by Leonard Abrams. Brazil, once the world's largest slave colony, was a brutal and deadly place for millions of Africans. But thousands escaped and rebelled. Today their communities confront the modern world. Quilombo Country is their story. ("Quilombo" is an Angolan word meaning "encampment.") Quilombo Country ranges from the Northeastern sugar regions to the heart of the Amazon rainforest, discussing issues of political identity, land rights, and racial and socioeconomic discrimination. We observe daily activities that allow the quilombolas to survive in relative isolation, including food preparation, construction, hunting and fishing. Also included is rare footage of Macumba and Paje ceremonies, Danca Crioulla, and Boi Bumba celebrations, and festivals of the Mast. 2006

Title: Siqueiros: Artist and Warrior
Mediatype: Video
Description: The life of Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros (1896-1974) was one of passion, political commitment and controversy, perilous adventure, and prolific artistic achievement. Together with Diego de Rivera and Jose Orozco, Siqueiros was a leader of the Mexican mural movement. While each of these artists were concerned with producing popular, public, and political art for a revolutionary society, Siqueiros was the most politically active of them all. A stormy, iconoclastic personality, he was one of the great desperadoes of modern art. Siqueiros regarded his life and painting as a battle with himself and against social justice. A revolutionary, innovative and talented creator, he loved, fought and painted with extreme passion and with hot fury. Narrated by Ricardo Montalban, (Cheyenne autumn). Written and directed by Hector Tajonar.

Title: Chronically Unfeasible
Mediatype: Video
Description: Set in exotic Brazil, director Sérgio Bianchi's bitterly sarcastic political comedy skewers race and class relations with witty precision as it presents a society in chaos. The story revolves around six characters who serve as a microcosm of modern Brazil, a people besieged by corruption, exploitation, sexual oppression and social discord. How these characters interact and strive for identity is at the core of a controversial, original and unsettling look at the class struggle that is funny as it is intelligent. Not since Luis Buñuel's The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie has a film balanced biting social critique, a kaleidoscope of memorable characters, and humor tinged with the realities and hypocrisies of everyday life. 2000

Title: Mango Yellow

Description: The hothouse atmosphere of Brazil comes alive in Mango Yellow, where lust and economic desperation combine in a volatile brew of provocative cinema. On the mean streets of the coastal town of Recife, and array of characters including a jaded waitress, a gay cook, a philandering butcher, and his evangelical wife emerge as "full dimensional people in touch with their explosive feelings" (The New York Times). "The movie surreal flavor underscores its message: This is how the lower half lives in Brazil, and by extension, humanity at its most basic, getting along without the rose-colored protections that affluence affords." (The New York Times). 2002.

Title: Justice
Mediatype: Video
Description: How and for whom does the judicial system work in Brazil? Without attempting to provide definite answers, Maria Ramos takes her camera to a place rarely seen by outsiders: a criminal courtroom in Rio de Janeiro. Ramos observes the daily routine of several individuals, people on both sides: those who work there every day (public attorneys, judges, prosecutors) and those who are merely passing through (the accused). Strongly reminiscent of the work of Frederick Wiseman, the camera is used as an instrument to see the social theater and the structures of power--things generally invisible to us. The corridors of the Courts of Justice, the design and layout of the courtroom, the discourse, the codes, postures--all the little visual details and the sounds become relevant. The filmmaker does not interpret what she films: she gives us no interviews or narration; the camera simply records what goes on in front of it. The film cuts between scenes of hearings and images shot outside the closed world (in the direction centre at some of the character's homes), linking the courtroom with the society of which it is part and showing its impact on people's lives. 2004

Title: The Agronomist
Mediatype: Video
Description: From Academy Award winning filmmaker Jonathan Demme, "The Agronomist" tells the story of Haitian national hero, journalist, and freedom fighter Jean Dominique, whom Demme first met and filmed in 1986. As owner and operator of his nation's oldest and only free radio station, Dominique was frequently at odds with his country's various repressive governments and spent much of the 80's and early 90's in exile in New York, where Demme continued to interview him over the years. Dominique fought tirelessly against his country's overwhelming injustice, oppression, and poverty but it was Dominique's shocking and still unsolved assassination in April of 2000 that gave the director the impetus to assemble more than a decade's worth of material into a celebration of this dynamic man and his legacy. 2003

Title: A Night in Havana: Dizzy Gillespie in Cuba
Mediatype: Video
Description: The indisputable founding father of "bebop," Dizzy Gillespie remains one of the most recognizable and popular figures in jazz history. During his heyday in the 1940s, Dizzy was one of the first American jazz musicians to incorporate the electrifying sound of Afro-Cuban rhythms into a big-band setting. Forty years later, the legendary jazz trumpeter was invited to Cuba, the wellspring of his inspiration, to headline the Fifth International Jazz Festival in Havana. The journey, as documented in this star-studded film, was a spiritual and triumphal homecoming for the musical genius.
Featuring outstanding performances with then-rising stars trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, among other celebrated Cuban musicians, director John Holland expertly offers a carefully fleshed-out portrait of a musician "whose robust musical ebullience is matched by an earthly sense of humor" (The New York Times). Among the film's performances, Dizzy delivers speed-of-light bop licks on his Afro-Latin and calypso tinged tunes "A Night in Tunisia" and "Manteca," and is candidly captured as he plays, scats, dances, and jokes, with a joy and exuberance that light up the stage. 1998

Title: Worlds Apart
Mediatype: Video
Description: In Southern Belize, Pedro, a 23 year old Maya, with the help of Indigenous partners from Canada, is combining ancient wisdom with modern technology to help preserve the rainforest and the Maya’s way of life. Roads, logging, lack of land rights and a devastating hurricane are just a few of the challenges Pedro must face in his battle to preserve the rainforest and its treasure trove of medicinal plants. In his efforts to protect and rejuvenate the rainforest, Pedro is learning both the ancient wisdom of traditional healers and modern techniques of satellite mapping. Maps like the ones Pedro is learning to make are being used by Maya leaders in negotiations with government for a co-management agreement that will give the Maya a say in how their ancestral lands will be developed. But, if the Maya and other Indigenous peoples of the world are going to win their struggle with development it will be up to young people like Pedro to create a sustainable balance between traditional and modern lifestyles.
