Excellence in Latin American Studies
>>May 2, 2005

This event recognized Best Paper prize winners, Best Graduate Faculty and Best Undergraduate Faculty as selected by the appropriate student constituencies. Also, the Stone Center recognized its best Teaching Assistant, and its outstanding graduate and undergraduate student leaders.


Latin American Children's Festival at the Children's Resource Center
>>April 2, 2005

The Pebbles Center sponsored the first annual Latin American Children's Festival at the New Orleans Public Library's Children's Resource Center. This event featured local artist, performance groups, food catered by the Latin American Immersion Project and much more. The Stone Center would like to thank all those who made this event a success! Cuba Connections
>>March/April 2005

This three-part lecture series/performance featured some of the cities and countries most notable Cuban music scholars and performers. Included in this teacher's workshop/public lecture series were Bill Summers, Ned Subtle, Tomás Montoya, Arturo O'Farrill, and more. Each of night, participates explored the cultural, historical and musical connections between New Orleans and Cuban with not only lectures, but demonstrations as well.

Learning from Everyday People: Teaching Your Students to do Cultural Research with the Garífuna of Central America and New Orleans
>>Thursday, March 10, 2005, 4:00 - 8:00 PM

The Garífuna of Central America and New Orleans was the focus of this spring LARC workshop. Together with the help of Xavier University and African Diaspora Studies, 25 teachers were treated to a fanastic workshop on how to teach students to do enthnographic research with people in their community. The end of the workshop featuring local Garífuna discussing their unique place in New Orleans and the world.


Pachanga en el Patio
>>March 3, 2005

The spring Pachangas began this March with everyone's favorite local Latin band, Otra. Although the weather was dreary, the food was hot and the music was hotter. This Pachanga was co-sponsored and well attended by the Center for International Students and Scholars, and TULASO.


Carlos Consalvi and Radio Venceremos
>>February 17, 2005

Carlos Henriquez Consalvi, better known in El Salvador as Comandante Santiago, founded Radio Venceremos in 1980. After the war ended in a negotiated peace settlement in 1992, Consalvi turned his attention to documenting the history of El Salvador, because he felt that so much of the historical record had been lost during the war. He founded a museum, El Museo de la Palabra y la Imagen, has collected an impressive collection of archival information, and has produced several documentary films. His visited was well attended by students, historians and the local community.


Suyapa Ingles Wins Staff Excellence Award
>>December 14, 2005

Suyapa Ingles, assistant director of administration, was recognized for her impact on cost savings at the center, in particular for her creation of a new budget- tracking system that promotes long-term planning, facilitates flexibility and allows the center to maximize its efforts to promote Latin American programming. The award was presented by Tulane President Scott Cowen. Congratulations Sue!


La Conquista at Tulane
>>November 9, 2004

The Stone Center present a La Conquista: An Aztec Clown Drama. In the words of the author, director and Stone Center graduate,Tristan Codrescu, "La Conquista is a play is about the Aztecs, Cortez and La Malinche. This play is about violence-Spanish, Aztec, ours, yours. This is a play about hope in a hopeless situation; about the history we're making and the history we've made; about the meetings of modernity and mythology; nature and economy; and the very old conflict between the Gods of Life and the Gods of Death".


Third Annual Tulane Maya Symposium and Workshop
>>October 29-31, 2004

The theme for this year was "Fifteen Centuries of Maya Literature". Presenters included Shannon Plank, Alfonso Lacanda, Paul Sullivan, Harvey and Victoria Bricker and many more. After another succesful, it's time to start planning for 2005!


Ogden After Hours for Teachers "Gaze at the Moon, Stars and Southern Art"
>> October 28, 2004

As a pre-Day of the Dead celebration, LARC collaborated with the Ogden Museum of Southern Art for their Ogden After Hours for Teachers. This event featured Day of the Dead work stations, lectures by Tulane faculty, lesson plans for using Ogden exhibits, plus live music and food.
