African presence in Cuban visual arts

The influence of African culture on Cuban painters from the 19th century to the present will be discussed. Images and historical references to the works will be used to understand the polysemy, variety of styles and concepts addressing aspects of African heritage in Cuban visual arts.

Raul Ruiz Miyares
Mr Miyares is a researcher, art critic and specialist in popular Cuban religions with 20 years of experience in the Casa del Caribe in Santiago de Cuba. He is author of the book Elementos africanos en obras de pintores cubanos (African elements in Cubans painters’ works, editorial academia 1996) Other books pending publication include Para una historia de las artes visuals en Santiago de Cuba (A history of visual art in Santiago de Cuba) and Estudios etnográficos de sur oriente cubano (Ethnographic studies of eastern Cuba).
