Location
MARI Seminar Room, Dinwiddie 305

The Middle American Research Institute is pleased to announce a special guest lecture by Dr. Bruce Love, entitled: “The Maya Calendar and the True Meaning of 2012.”

Dr. Love is an independent researcher working in Maya archaeology, the ethnohistory and cultural anthropology of the Yucatán Peninsula, and is especially interested in Maya ritual and religion. He received his doctorate in anthropology from UCLA in 1986. Dr. Love has been researching and publishing about Maya culture for more than 30 years and brings his expertise to the topic of Maya predictions and the Maya calendar. This lecture explains that the Maya had a number of calendar systems, some of which have been lost over time while others remain vibrant among today’s indigenous groups. Examples are shown from Classic Maya monuments as well as the seventeenth century Books of Chilam Balam, and there will be audience participation in learning how to read the dates found among the ancient hieroglyphs. By the end of the evening we will be closer to separating the truth from the fiction about December 21, 2012.

As always, light refreshments will be provided.
