This Wednesday and Thursday Latin Grammy nominated Orquestra Contemporânea de Olinda, a funky brass band from Pernambuco, Brazil, will perform and participate in a workshop at Tulane University.

The New York Times recently reviewed their first gig last Thursday, check it out here.

Check out their music.

BACKGROUND:

Orquestra Contemporânea de Olinda is a 10-piece brass band that plays the high energy rhythms of their Brazilian state of Pernambuco mixed with Afro-Beat and Latin grooves. Their performance and workshops will mark the close of the year-long centennial celebration of Newcomb Department of Music, and highlight the study of Latin American music and culture at Tulane University.

All events are free and open to the public.

On Wednesday, April 7 from 7:30-9:00 pm, the band will perform at Dixon Recital Hall in Dixon Annex 152 at Tulane University. A reception will follow the show.

On Wednesday, April 7 from 3:00-4:00 pm in Room 201 of the Lavin-Bernick Center at Tulane University, there will be a career retrospective of the two lead singers of the group, Maciel Salú and Tiné. The two performers will speak about their various musical projects in the context of their roles as both guardians and innovators of musical tradition in their home state of Pernambuco.

On Thursday, April 8 from 11:00 am-12:15 pm in Dixon Recital Hall, the band will conduct a brass and percussion workshop, demonstrating several of the Brazilian styles that they exuberantly recombine in their music.

The performance and workshops are presented by Tulane University’s Newcomb Department of Music, Stone Center for Latin American Studies and the Deep South Regional Humanities Center, and the music department’s Maynard Klein award. For more information on the events, please contact Daniel Sharp at Newcomb Department of Music at 504-865-5273 or Denise Woltering at the Stone Center for Latin American Studies at 504-862-3143.
