Los Tres Grandes - The Mexican Muralist Movement

Designed by Maria Gaztimbide and Brian Knighten
Fall 2003

This unit deals with Los Tres Grandes, the three major figures of the Mexican muralist movement: Diego Rivera (1886-1957), David Alfaro Siqueiros (1896-1974), and José Clemente Orozco (1883-1949). The unit provides a contextualization of the mural movement in terms of contemporary Mexican politics, particularly the Mexican Revolution, and the role of Francisco ‘Panco’ Villa, Emiliano Zapata, Alvaro Obregón, and the Partido Revolucionario Nacional (PNR) in the lives and work of these artists. It also introduces artistic terms such as Avant Garde, and connects the mural movement to Mexican history and nationalism.
