Cuba and the Dominican Republic on Screen at the New Orleans Film Festival

October 10th, 2019

The New Orleans Film Society is presenting its 30th annual New Orleans Film Festival from October 16th through October 23rd in venues across the city. From a record number of 6,500 submissions from 104 countries, the festival’s curatorial team has selected 232 films for inclusion in this year’s festival.

This year’s film festival will feature several films relating to the Latin American community, either through their subject matter or through their creation by Latin American filmmakers. The Stone Center for Latin American Studies is pleased to co-sponsor two screenings of the film De Lo Mio, by director Diana Peralta.

Two “ride or die” sisters raised in NYC reunite with their estranged brother in the Dominican Republic to clean out their late father’s childhood home. The siblings laugh, brawl, and face their demons as they come to terms with letting go of their last connection to their motherland.

Additionally, the Cuban and Caribbean Institute is co-sponsoring two screenings of the documentary Havana, From on High, directed by Pedro Ruiz.

The chronic shortage of housing in Central Havana has pushed the city upwards, where life spills out onto the rooftops. Resilient and remarkable, these rooftop dwellers have a privileged point of view on a society in the process of major transformation.

The two screenings of De Lo Mio will take place at the Blue Orleans Theater (The Advocate) on October 19th at 3:45PM and October 21st at 11:00PM. The Havana, From on High screenings will take place at the Contemporary Arts Center on October 17th at 12:30PM in the Ranch Theater and October 22nd at 3:45PM in the Tubi Theater. The Stone Center is offering a limited number of free tickets on a first-come, first-served basis. They will be available at the Stone Center office starting on Tuesday, October 15th.
