Fitting Brazil into the K-12 Classroom: Summer 2017 Teacher Institute
June 26th, 2017
For a week this past June 19 – 23, a small group of K-12 educators met on campus at The University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia to explore innovative ways to teach about Brazil at the K-12 level. Many of the teachers already teach about Brazil and were looking for new ways to invigorate their teaching. Others were looking to introduce the culture and language of Brazil into their classroom, school, and the community at large for the first time.
Historians, Portuguese language faculty, Artists, Capoeiristas, Anthropologists and many other scholars filled the packed schedule. This collaborative institute between the Stone Center for Latin American Studies, Vanderbilt’s Center for Latin American Studies and The University of Georgia’s Latin American & Caribbean Studies Institute is in its fourth year. Each year new topics are discussed while many new and returning teachers participate in engaging discussions and develop unique lesson plans.
Next year’s institute will be located in Brazil. If interested, please contact us by emailing dwolteri@tulane.edu.
