Latin American at the Crossroads: Venezuela

April 21st, 2017
4:00 PM

Location
Greenleaf Conference Room
100A Jones Hall

The final panel in the Latin American at the Crossroads series will discuss Venezuela. Already suffering from shortages of basic goods and devaluation of its currency, Venezuela faced protests from the opposition when the National Electoral Council decided to suspend the process to initiate a recall referendum. In the wake of these events, the government and opposition held a much-needed dialogue, but with little results. More recently, the Supreme Court assumed the powers of the legislature, in a controversial decision that was broadly decried and subsequently partially reversed. How will the country move forward?

The panel will feature Jennifer McCoy, Professor of Political Science at Georgia State University, Harold Trinkunas, Associate Director of the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanfod University, and David Smilde, Professor of Sociology at Tulane University.

The talk is free and open to the public but RSVP is required. For more information and to reserve your seat, please contact Sefira Fialkof at cipr@tulane.edu or phone 504.862.3141.
