Sir Anthony Atkinson, a champion for social justice, passes

January 9th, 2017

On January 1, the world of economic development and social justice lost one of its most brilliant thinkers and fine human beings: Sir Anthony Barnes Atkinson. For those whose research has focused on inequality and social justice, the loss is incommensurable.

Here you can read the tribute from his colleagues at ECINEQ (The Society for the Study of Economic Inequality), of which Tony was the first president.

The photo accompanying this article is at the first meeting of the Commission on Global Poverty, which he chaired. Nora Lustig, pictures on the far right, is Samuel Z. Stone Professor of Latin American Economics and Director of the Commitment to Equity Institute (CEQ) at Tulane University.
