Op-ed on Venezuela by David Smilde published in New York Times

October 31st, 2016

Tulane’s David Smilde’s opinion piece, Chavismo Full Circle was published in the New York Times today. In it he blames Venezuela’s current socio-economic and political crisis on what he calls, “a set of obviously dysfunctional economic policies held in place by a government unwilling to change course.”

Smilde also stresses the importance of “effective international engagement”, noting that “any dialogue that occurs should not be seen as an alternative to the referendum but should focus primarily on restoring the people’s right to choose their leaders.”
