Liberalism and Its Discontents
January 28th, 29th, and 30th, 2016

Tulane University’s Latin American Graduate Organization (LAGO) will hold the 2016 Graduate Conference: “Liberalism and Its Discontents.” At the conference, we encourage participants to engage in an interdisciplinary discussion on the subject of liberalism in the Americas. More specifically, we seek scholarly works that explore and critique the influence of Enlightenment and post-Enlightenment thought in Latin America and its Diaspora. Through this conversation, we seek to trouble notions of “discovery,” “progress,” “development,” and “democracy” and critically examine how these terms are used in the field of Latin American Studies. Papers from all disciplines that explore any historical or contemporary moment are welcomed. We invite submissions in English, Spanish, or Portuguese.
